The original subject was "Re: Hyd pump on gilson 33048a?".

Morning all, My grandfather bought the 33048A brand new in 1971 as well. I have now acquired and bringing it back to life. Have successfully got the motor running well, however, struggling with the tiller model(GIL-33095A). When engage the PTO, the drive shaft spins, the tines spin on tiller, but when lower tiller/tines to begin tilling the tines stop upon touching the ground, however the drive shaft continues to spin. Originally thought the key-ways were gone. During tear down found key-ways still intact. I"m not sure if the problem is that the worm gear is worn or there"s other issues. I expect parts to be very scarce. Looking for any advice or if anyone out there has the tiller assembly for this model that they are willing to part with. Thanks for any assistance. Dave

I just purchased a rotory tiller: gil 33163a
Can any of you guys send a close up of the lift assembly? Mine is missing those parts. A friend gave me his father in law's mntogmery ward tractor. The deck was rotten, so I found a gilson deck and snowblower that came with another gilson tractor. My collection/illness is growing.

The paint I used was light color gold made by Dupont. It was their acrylic enamel and it was a mismatch that they had left over. The blue was New Holland's acrylic enamel. Paint is very expensive so is the thinner. Hal

Remember that when you are sourcing parts, Gilson made the Montgomery Wards machinery. Gilson equivalents have interchangeable parts.

I sold a 1970 Montgomery Wards 14 gear drive a few weeks ago. They are heavy built tanks!

Thanks for the info. Are you aware of anyone else that might have a gear drive available since you just sold the one you had recently?

Unfortunately, I don't. I snatch Gilson made tractors up when I see them, clean them cosmetically and mechanically, and pass them on to someone who can give it some use. I like the gear drives better than the hydros, for no good reason except for simplicity, I guess.

I do have a later Gilson made Montgomery Wards, I believe a 1979, with a two cylinder vertical crank Briggs. It will be for sale also as soon as I fix the wiring issues.

I have a few parts if you need those. Front axle, early 70's dash panel, PTO/gas tank mounts, and a salvage snow blade mount/front hitch.

If I hear of one for sale, I'll let you know. What are you looking for? Early 70's model, gear drive, horizontal crank?

Yes, it is a 1970 model (hydrostatic) 14HP. Horizontal shaft. I'm looking for the gear drive assembly for rotary tiller model (GIL-33095A). However, it does not necessarily need to this model #. I believe years '70 thru '77 used the same gear assembly. Appreciate you keeping me in mind if you run across one. Thanks for your time and response. Dave (Wilton, California)

One of those tillers came with my tractor, but I traded it back to Wards for a rotary mower. It was too heavy for me to install. I always plow then use a Troy Bilt tiller. Hal

I have some Montgomery Wards, but don't have anything but the mower decks.
Is that a home made hitch in back for the plow? The reason i'm asking, is the bracket on tractor covers up the decal and looks to be stationary. They are good looking tractors when painted up like yours.
On the gear shift models I haven't seen any that has the variable speed pulley still on them, evidently that part didn't last very long.

The sleeve hitch came with the tractor for lifting and pulling different implements. Hal
PS: It also has a Wards part number.

If you're referring to the sleeve hitch it's connected to a bell crank that's connected to the hydraulic cylinder for raising and lowering implements. Hal

The plow is off a Viking walk behind tractor I bought in 1960. When I sold the Viking I kept the plow. To get the plow to work on the Wards tractor I had to make a template of the handles on the Viking. The hardest part was getting the bends the same. The bracket at the rear was copied off the Viking handles and the drawbar is
just of piece of metal bent 90 and welded to the plow bracket. When I first made it I used cap screws for mounting the bracket to the sleeve hitch. That was a pain so I made the bracket to fit the sleeve hitch using one pin.
The hydraulics on the tractor lifts and lowers the plow. Here are few pics of the plow bracket. You can still see the 4 tapped holes on the sleeve hitch. Hal

Thanks for the pictures of how you made the plow work. Around here where I live there wasn't any Montgomery Ward tractors that I knew of. I have some now and one that Gilson marketed as a Gilson, just painted different color than the Wards

Very nice looking tractor. Mine is identical. Well, I should say I plan on painting it as nice as you have yours as soon as I finish finding parts.

I do not have the mower attachment. If I can figure out or find the right parts for the tiller maybe I can contact you again regarding a mower attachment.

Thanks for your time and information.

Wow, you have the manual for the tiller. I do not have the original manual for my tractor but was able to locate a parts list manual for '74 models and newer. I also have a '74-77 Gilson service-maintenance manual. This one contains a section regarding the tiller attachment but not in a lot of detail. Would it be possible to get a copy of your manual somehow? I'd be willing to pay for all copy and shipping expenses if you're interested. I keep looking at your tractor all painted up so nice. One of these days I'll get there. Thanks again for your time. Dave (Wilton, California)

yes I thought the same thing at first as well. In fact the belt that was on there was to small. Replaced with correct size and still have the problem. Like you say, I think it's in the gear drive. I'm in Sacramento Ca. area. No of any guys that work on these older tractors that are inthis area? Thanks for help.
