Craftsman Hydrostatic

It is model 917.251522. Ive always heard not to change the oil in hydrostatics but this one has a filter. It works fine, but should I change it and what type of oil should I put back in? What filter should I put on it? Or just leave it alone?

How many hours does your tractor have, if it says? If it doesn't say, how old is it?

I bought it used, so Im not sure. It doest seem to have alot of use but alot of rust. Motor runs good and I put the deck on it.

I have the same tractor except 28hp, bought new in 1999. After 600-hrs of moderate service, I serviced my transmission oil/filter. Fluid looked "ok". It takes 2.5-qts of 10w30 motor oil. Google/Call hydrogear for a filter. Jason

Jason is right as to what you need to do. Just make sure you get no contaminants in the oil. Those hydros have very limited tolerances.

If you can, prefill the oil filter with oil before spinning it on. I believe they go straight up and down?

If that tractor has a hydrostatic transmission made by Hydro Gear it takes SH/CD 20-50 SYN oil. The manufacture says to only open that tranny if its leaking or your having problems with it.

I removed the fenders an gas tank. There was 2 innches of dried mud/crud around the whole transmission. Ive chiseled it off, just got to clean it alot more. I dont think I want to change its oil now, but it will need something soon, as the filter on the transmission has really deep surface rust. Not too long and it could start leaking. I think the previous owner stored it in his "under-sea garage".
