I've got a Ford garden tractor I've had for 5 years, and today I found the serial plate actually had numbers on it. Digital cameras are amazing. I thought they were all rubbed off. Can anyone decipher this? It's a 10hp Kohler, with a hydro. What model have I got? I'm looking for a hood.

Your picture is of an early seventies Ford by Jacobsen.
It would be an LGT 100, 125, 145 or an LGT 165.
Depending on the engine horse power.
If it has a ten horse it should have a gear drive not a hydro.
Ford used the same model designation on the next model
Tractors from the late seventies. Yours is an open side model.
The later ones are referred to as closed side models.
All open side LGT"s used the same hood.
Unfortunately, whoever added those numbers to the data plate did not get the right. The O9JC number would be for the mower deck.
The model number should have been 32XX.
Those are great tractors. I have two. It"s worth getting a hood.

If it"s got a 10hp Kohler--then its the LGT100. I"ve got one. Don"t think they made them with a hydro transmission though. There is a Ford/Jacobsen group on Yahoo that has lots of Ford enthusiasts that can help out. Hope this helps.
 
I concur with Joe.
The only number that tells me anything is the Engine number. The first two digits tell me its a 1972 model but not the engine size. It could be a 10 HP engine but, if it is original to the tractor it will be a 12, 14 or 16 HP as the LGT-100 (10 HP version) was not available with hydro. Unless you can find some remnants of a designation on the shroud, I don't know of any easy way of positively determining the HP of the engine. There should be a decal located on the air cooling shroud either on the carburetor side at about the level of the points cover or on the flywheel side near the top. The designations are as follows: K241=10HP, K301=12HP, K321=14HP and K341=16HP. The model number is cast into the block but is not visible without removing the electric PTO clutch. These are wonderful little tractors and I have 10HP, 12HP and 14HP open side versions as well as two 16HP closed side versions. Only the LGT-125 is currently running. I have the engines for a 14HP and a 16HP bored over size with everything I need to completely rebuild them except the gumption.
Good mower decks are becoming difficult to find for these machines. I have a 48" blade on my LGT-125 and it can push a lot of snow for a machine of its size!

BTW, if that grill has no serious cracks, it is quite unusual and will contribute handsomely to the looks of a restoration.
 
I tried to join that group at your suggestion and had to go though so many hoops to get there I got lost and finally just gave up. I guess I'm not the most computer savvy.

LOL.....I guess I didn't clearly say what I really meant.
What I meant was that many of them wind up being smashed and patched up with sheet metal and screws and look pretty ugly.
Yours looks very nice, by the way!
I would say your tractor looks to be worth repairing even if you did not want to take on a total restoration.
Were you able to find any remnant of a model number on the engine?

No, O9JC... Is the model number for the deck. As a separate attachment,
They got different numbers and manuals.

The model number for the tractor should start with 32 and have a total of four numbers.

Do you have a deck?

The grill is not unusual, it's the same for all open sided LGT's
To have one in good condition is unusual.

Oh, I see about the grill. Yea, its really not a bad old tractor. The engine number is all there, I just neglected to put it on here. It's a KOHLER 241AS, SPEC# 466740, SERIAL # 5002707.
I have the deck but the spindle housings are in pretty bad shape, inside and out. I have a lathe and could probably line the bores but that's a bunch of work. Haven't really looked for replacements yet. Just wanted to see if I could find a (inexpensive) hood.
 
Hi again...for the Ford/Jacobsen interest group go to Yahoo.com and in the search box type Jacobsen Ford Group and it will take you there. I"m certain you have a LGT100 with the Kohler K241AS engine. Tough little machines and highly collectible.
 
Pat, I would agree.....except.....they never made a 10HP with the hydro. I would suspect that a 10HP engine has replaced an original 12HP engine somewhere along the line.
 
Thanks to all for the great suggestions. This is the only Ford I've ever had, so I surely wasn't familiar with them, but I know a lot more now than I did. I've played more with Wheel Horses in the past.
Here's a pic of one I reworked last summer after I loaned it to a guy who wrecked the trans, axle hubs, smashed the hood against the trailer I loaned him, bent the sub frame on the loader that was on it, broke the welds on the loader, sprung the bucket, and ruined the weight box. Outside of that it came back pretty good!!! No money of course. Sigh...

I went back and kept at it and I finally got joined to the Ford group. I don't think I had to give that much information to get my drivers license. LOL
I found some pics of the closed sided models Bryan was talking about. I don't think I've ever seen one of those before. I didn't realize Ford's were very collectable. Thanks for the info.

A kohler K241AS is 10HP, has a special oil pan (I believe on some of those Fords, the engine oil pan is part of the front axle, which makes it special). The S means its electric start.
