Hello everyone. I"m very new to gardening but love it. I looking at getting a small garden tractor for this year and have no idea where to start. I don"t want to spend a fortune before I"m sure what I may need. Any help, advice, or ideas are very much appreciated. Thanks |

| | I waited until this thread rolled over to page 2 before creating this post. I really have to wonder as to what goes through the minds of some people. They come on forums, seemingly desperate for good advice but never return to the thread to acknowledge any of the replies. Does Mr. Berry not realize that EIGHT people took valuable time out of their LIFE to try and assist him? I see this happening all too often on this forum and it just makes me shake my head in disgust over the rudeness exhibited. Rant over. |

| If you want a solid, no nonsense garden tractor, look for a wheel horse. The front one is a 1968 built out of 2 junkers for about $400 23 years ago, must have a million hours on it by now,the next one is a 1966,was given to me, put a new motor on it 30 years ago and it still works. The 518 by the shed I gave $700 for about 12 years ago,put 800 hrs on it with just normal maintenance. The 520 in back left was the real deal $495 with nice 4 foot mower, snow blower and blade. needed head gaskets. |

| Look for a Wards or Gilson garden tractors. I've had this Ward's since 1971. I bought the tiller for $100.00 and installed a new 10hp engine and tines also painted it. Hal |

| I love the allis chalmers, you could buy any model from the late 69s to the 80s and they will all be great little lawn and garden tractors, attachments aren't the toughest to find and there built heavy and are built to last |

| Two maybe three years ago, I carried a load of scrap to the local recycler. As I pulled into the unloading area, I saw an Allis-Chalmers lawn tractor over to the side. That was before I found this website. Had I known then what I know now, I would have bought it. |

| The Ariens GT and S Models are nice heavy duty garden tractors that usually don't sell very high. They are easy to add a Cat 0 3pt on and there are a variety of implements that were made for them around most areas. |

| Lawn or garden??? If a garden then not likely to need a garden tractor since now days most are just riding lawn mowers nothing more an few will plow or disk etc. If your doing a garden you need a tiller. Rear tine are the best and the easiest to run. I use an old Troy-Built tiller my dad got new in 1972 to till my garden and have been doing so off and on here for 32 years. |

| | The question is....... do you actually NEED a garden tractor? There are plenty of LAWN TRACTORS out there that will cut grass, blow snow, plow snow, pull a lawn roll or garden cart but they are not suitable for ground engaging work in the veggie garden. So, the first thing we need to know is whether your veggie garden is large enough and situated ideally to make use of a garden tractor. You may be much better off to buy a walk-behind rotary tiller instead. A garden tractor is a large machine and it takes quite a bit of space on all four sides of the garden patch to turn the tractor around so you can make the next pass with the tiller or the harrows or the turning plough. We also need to know what your budget is because there is a huge difference in price between the $2000.00 MSRP for a John Deere L Series lawn tractor and an X700 Deere garden tractor that costs 4 to 5 X that figure. Yes... I know you want to buy used but a used Cadillac costs more than a used Chevrolet. Aside from the garden aspect, how large of a property do you own? How much grass do you need to mow? How much driveway is involved if you are in the snow belt area? What other tasks do you need this machine for? The more information you give us, the better we can advise you when it comes to brands, models and attachments. |
