I've been putting together yard equipment for a house I'm building in central Michigan. I bought a 18 hp twin (MTD built) on Ebay and after a whole lot of TLC I have about $200 total into it and it has been fantastic for the 4 acres of grass I've been cutting. I picked up a slightly used 40" thrower attachment for it that was missing the pully to engine drive. Got some used drive parts and adapted it to the deck mechanism so the thrower engages and drops to surface level using the mower deck lever and only have $100 total into it. I know I still have to get chains and wheel or some other weights. I have never used a tractor/thrower combination so my question is this;
The helper springs lifting the thrower are balanced so that any less and I wouldn't be able to lift (and disengage) the thrower with the deck lever. Any more and the thrower won't drop flat onto the ground. Can these springs be TOO strong so the thrower rides up over the snow rather than cut through it? Also do you think there will be issues with the thrower pushing against the deck mechanism rather than it pivoting directly on the frame? Thanks for any thoughts.
