I have a worn out 17hp engine. id like to replace that engine with a diesel. Has anyone put a yanmar from a 455 or something in a 317? maybe a kubota?

The most popular repower for older hydrostat garden tractors is the Briggs Vanguard, followed by the Honda engines.

If you are stuck on a diesel, you might look for ideas at a 332, which is a little Yanmar diesel in the same footprint as the 317. I know a couple guys have put Kubota engines from refrigeration units in garden tractors but I don't have a link to give you.

Yanmars are good motors, think the kohler diesels are okay to they sell those is the northern tool magizine, sure you can find them on there website

Thanks for the responses guys. Before I pull the engine. Can the pressure feed cranks be purchased? If so maybe I can swap cranks out and rebuild the original engine. Any thoughts?

A good machinist could drill the crank you have but you still wouldn't have much oil flow or pressure. A Magnum 18 is very similar to a Phase II KT-17 with electronic ignition. That's an easy changeover.

There are other differences in the blocks. The Series One cannot be made into a Series two. Inadequate oil pump, oil galleries, pressure relief valve etc.

go to the Kohler web site, download the manuals and compare oiling systems.
