repower riding mower

i have a john deere model 57 riding mower that needs repowerung. it has a tecumseh v70 engine.
i looked for short blocks and overhaul kits for the v70 and found out that tecumseh left the small engine mfg in 2008 so parts a rare. i need an engine with a heavy flywheel, electric start, in the 6 to 8 hp range, that will fit in the rear engine compartment. any suggestions?

There is no other brand that will fit in this mower, the engine requires a 7/8" diameter shaft.

5/25/2007 The Tecumseh engine made for this is no longer available. NOTE: You could possibly use the tvm140 if you change your pulley.

There are many parts avail out there both oem & aftermarket for your eng,you just have to put a little effort into looking for them.

For openers goto ebay & type tecumseh V70 in search, there are 2 std size rebuild kits in listings,if after disassemblying eng & having bore size checked & you need a rebore & os piston set, find out what size os set you need, then goto partstree with eng mod/spec# and see what pn is for os piston set, then search ebay for set or do a goggle search for piston set.

If you know short block pn then search ebay for tecumseh short block & go thru listings or do a goggle search for same.IF you don't know short block pn,then check with several local mower shops to see if they have short block pn listing for a V70,depending on spec# of eng there are at least 4 different pn for short blocks, some spec# have no short block replacements.

do you think a 6hp kawasaki FJ180V-CS11-Rp
would fit and work. has the heavy flywheel.
don't want to junk it as it works great for triming around all the yard stuff.

I'm not familiar with the kawasaki eng,the only thing I can say is take some carefull measurements on both eng & compare mounting centers & see if you have the clearance around eng to shoehorn kawasaki eng into space behind seat,if you can fit it in you may have to respot mounting holes & possibly rework cables/wiring to eng,at the very least you'll probably have to replace pulley(s)as existing pulley(s) have a 7/8" bore & the shaft on kawasaki is probably metric.

Goto link below, click on repower old equipment, select jd from mfg on left side of pg,look at notes for mod 57,you might try contacting them about a replacement eng or see if they know if kawasaki eng will fit, they may have an update on eng replacement, but haven't posted it in repower section.
