AMF transaxle

I have an 8/36 AmF lawn tractor bought new in 1973 or maybe 1974. I need a transaxle for it. Does someone know what other machines would have used the same one? Its got three forward gears and one reverse.

If I remember correctly, Many trans-axles back then were made by one company called Rootes. No matter what the brand mower. I am sure that there are some out there, it may take a little looking. There should be a model number on the transaxle, if you can find this it would help in your search.

Get the Information off the lawn tractor such as model <serial # & look on the computer . Lots of times if you get the mower partsmanual it will show the complete transaxle with the info about it.

Please allow me to correct myself. Although there was a company named Rootes, I was actually thinking of Peerless. Peerless made a wide variety of transaxles for many applications. I must have had a case of Dumb A$$ yesterday.

breimer .I don t think my last post went thru complete. Get the model & serial # off the mower & go on line . Sometimes when you get the parts manual it will give the info on the transaxle such as model # part number of the unit.

thanks all for your replies. the tractor is currently at my son in law's place. Next time Im there Ill try to get numbers. also i'll try to establish if its a peerless or not. I kinda doubt that it is but I'll verify if theres a tag on it or something engraved in the housing. I know its an aluminum housing and it looks different from many units I've looked at in search of this transmission. The main issue with mine is that one of the axle shafts has about 3/8 of an inch up and down play in the housing. I think its worn right through the bushing and into the housing.
