Oil Filter Woes - OT, BUT an interesting saga!

I spent quite a bit of time diagnosing why the OEM oil filter that the dealer sold me for my 50 hp Honda outboard motor did not fit correctly.

Sometimes sourcing the correct OEM part isn't always straightforward.

It is replaceable. If you can see threads all the way on the part, I would guess it is threaded. But that is only a 50/50 guess.

rrobert:
The threads don't extend all the way to the block BUT it may be a 'nipple', threaded on both ends.
The part is listed as a separate piece in the OEM parts list.
If it was a pressed-in piece, it is less likley that it would be a field-serviceable item BUT I agree with you, it's a 50%-50% deal.

Thanks and Regards,
Jon

Have you contacted Honda?

I used to ride Honda motorcycles and I had a 1976 750cc that I bought new that had some electrical and transmission issues.

Local dealer was great but we ended up having to get the factory rep involved. I talked to both the local guys as well as the folks in California and together they worked to solve the problems. It was a very positive experience and went a long way to to convince me that they will stand behind what they sell. Since that time I have owned several Honda bikes, snowthrower, and my wife's new CRV that she loves.

You have nothing to lose by contacting them and asking them what their thoughts are on this. You are certainly not the only guy with the issue and you may be able to help others.

Your posting with the filter description is very well done!
