adjusting valves on 22hp Briggs engine

V twin Intek engine.

The written directions say to do it how I would do it with both valves at .005.

The video shows a technique I think would work with both valves at .004.

This engine sometimes backfires when customer turns it off. The fuel shut off solenoid clicks when I turn the key. I think these are the engines that have vanishing push rods that I have read about in here.

Why would both sparkplugs be bad? When I got there, he and his dad tried to tell me it had spark. When I tested it, I got shocked by the wire but there was 0 spark where the spark was supposed to be. New plugs and it fired up.

I was thinking water in the gas would do that, age or someone dropped them really well a few times.

Anyway, I want to do a valve adjustment out of caution and hoping it cures the backfire too.

Customer went from a an old Monkey Wards mtd to a Dixon with worn clutch cones to a John Deere. I hope he keeps this one. I like it the best.

Running old,bad gas can cause that spark-on-the-wire but not at the plug electrode problem. It makes deposits on the plug that look nearly normal but conduct the spark bypassing the electrodes. That has happened several times on my old tractor fleet.

OHV engine- you set at .004 intake and .006 Exhaust. BUT it must be done at 1/4" past TDC if you have compression relief. Will have with OHV

That is a tight .006
