Your last download of the recoil guided me in the right direction. Of course some slight modifications were required to replace damaged areas. Now not only does the recoil work but it doesn't have to set around in a box to throw away at a later date.

Everything seems to work as it should----is there anything on the generator end that should be lubed?

Nothing to lube. But you should make sure the brushes are free in the guides. You can gently pull on the brush wire. They should move freely and snap back in place.

Go to smokstak Onan section. Post your full model and serial number. Plus your email address. Someone will be along with a manual to send you.

In a reply to previous post about this unit, there was a slight typo error on my part, should have read-many onan eng were built by studebaker.

In my younger days,I went to several onan seminars in the late 60's-early 70's,the remark was made in at least two seminars by instructors that the J & some CCK eng were being built(not designed)at a studebaker plant in canada, then shipped to US assembly plant(s),the actual eng design was probably onan,as far as unit we're talking about now same was probably an onan design/built by onan due to fact it was before the 60's thru 75 time frame when studebaker owned onan. This is what myself/others were told yrs ago,how much is actual fact I don't know.

Joe I went to the Onan factory in 1981. I also heard about the same thing. We had a tour of the plant. Saw some of the larger units being built. Plus RV units. Never did know where the Js were built. But I do know they were introduced when Studebaker owned Onan. I do know that the water pump from a Lark. Will fit on the water cooled J units.
