Briggs question

Got an old 5 horse Briggs on the farm that I use regularly. I remember dad buying it new right at 30 years ago.

It has started blowing a little blue smoke when going from idle to full throttle. Not a lot, but I will want to rebuild it at some point. All of these years and it has only needed a carb kit. It is a good old workhorse.

The issue is that my brother replaced the front of the shroud with the recoil on it with a used unit when the recoil went. That's where the serial and model numbers are, right? Now what do I do to get the right piston and/or rings? Are all of the 5 horse units the same?

I know that it can be pinpointed close in year if that helps. It was the first year that they went from the pull choke on the end of the carb to the rounded arrow that rotates toward the gas cap (to apply choke). I thought that was so strange at the time but may help me now.

I know I can probably get the stuff if I know what to buy. It won't be a bad project this winter when things are slow.

Any chance your Bro. kept the old shroud?

13202 sticks in my mind but I don't know if all the pistons/rods were the same. There were at least 3 different carburetors used in the 30 years or so they were produced. I haven't had to look up internal parts for the engine.

Its not having the 'type' number that will get you sometimes.

My brother lacks the mechanical knowledge to realize that keeping the old one was important. Realizing that putting some parts in the old shroud was pretty easy escaped him as well. I guess you would call him dangerous.

It is just the good old L-head engine. With my luck something about the innards changed, though. I remember that it was the first time I saw the 206 cc designation being advertised in larger script on the shroud. I even remember where the orange price sticker was stuck on the shroud. I wish that photographic memory applied to the model and serial number information! The shroud that is on there seems to be a bit older than the engine (and is painted bright orange and says Monkey Wards on it!). Do I buy parts for those numbers and hope for the best?

If you can't come up with mod/type numbers & pn's for parts needed & eng has a aluminun block with a steel sleeve you might want to consider replacing eng with an imported eng from harbor freight, northern tool other online dealers.HF has a horiz 6.5hp ohv eng on sale in sept flyer for $100,if you have a store close to you this might be the way to go.

If consider time trying to locate correct parts, cost of all parts needed plus cost of a rebore if an os piston set needed it will probably be well over a $100,if you get eng from HF,get the 2 yr extended warrenty for $20,this way if you have a problem with eng you can return it for a new one.

If it is horizontal crankshaft parts should not be a problem ,except I see 2 different pistons and exhaust valves for the 5 HP.
I don't know what the difference is.
