Got an old 5 horse Briggs on the farm that I use regularly. I remember dad buying it new right at 30 years ago.
It has started blowing a little blue smoke when going from idle to full throttle. Not a lot, but I will want to rebuild it at some point. All of these years and it has only needed a carb kit. It is a good old workhorse.
The issue is that my brother replaced the front of the shroud with the recoil on it with a used unit when the recoil went. That's where the serial and model numbers are, right? Now what do I do to get the right piston and/or rings? Are all of the 5 horse units the same?
I know that it can be pinpointed close in year if that helps. It was the first year that they went from the pull choke on the end of the carb to the rounded arrow that rotates toward the gas cap (to apply choke). I thought that was so strange at the time but may help me now.
I know I can probably get the stuff if I know what to buy. It won't be a bad project this winter when things are slow.
