Amps On Electric Clutch On White Zero Turn Mowers

A friend and I worked on a Zero turn mower made by White tonight . It has shot at least two pto switches and the safety switches for the reverse ( the switch that the arms presses against when you pull them back ) . It is a 50 inch cut with a 22 hp Briggs Inteck engine . I think that the electric clutch for the blades is going bad . My question is this - What is the correct amp pull for the clutch under normal conditions when everything is adjusted right ? Does anyone know a way to test the clutch other than measuring amperage pull ? Thanks for any and all help.

Some of those electric clutches have an "air gap" adjustment. Google your model mower, and air gap adjustment, and you might find the answer.
 
Those clutches should pull 3-5 amps. Over 5 amps is too much.

v=IR

12.6v=5(R)

R=2.52 ohms.


your clutch should have 2.5-3.5 ohms resistance. And of course, not be shorted to the cover or crankshaft. fewer ohms means winding has an internal short and current will be higher causing other components to overheat.

Those models are notorious for killing the backup safety switches because they are in constant use. Also, sometimes the clutch lining wears to the point it does not engage every time, especially when hot.

Just fixed one a guy was running commercially a month ago.
