best 10-20 hp hydrostatic tractor

Any three digit Cub Cadet that ends in an Odd number (105,129,149) some Wheel Horses or possibly Case/Ingersoll. John Deeres are also good but usually more expensive. I like the Cubs because they have a wide variety of attachments and options so you can add options and attachments as you needs, time and money allow.

JD model 140, 300, 314, 316, 312 with Kohler. Have blades, mower decks, and tillers or snow blowers. Mower deck can be upgraded/replaced with current deck with greasable spindles, heavier, etc.
I have a 314 with deck I would sell. 14 horse Kohler and runs/mows, in Iowa.

i like the deeres. the ease of changing attatchments, attatchments readily available and parts are very easy to obtain. usually more money but the best usually is. i know ill get some comments on that one but ive been a deere guy fo 50 years. try changing the deck for a snowplow on a couple of tractors, deere is by far the easiest

I had a Cub Cadet 147 that worked very good and didn't cost a lot to maintain. That's a 14-hp tractor.

I also had a CC 1650 (16-hp) that was a good tractor but costs to maintain it was more than the 147.

I have an Ariens S-16H from the late '70's that my grandpa bought new and from what I've read about them, they seem to be fairly well respected. I quit using mine for mowing when I got a newer subcompact but it still gets regular use tilling and cultivating in the garden. It has a Kohler engine and a Sundstrand hydro. Before this line was purchased by Ariens in 1974 the same basic tractor was built by New Holland starting around 1970.

I like the Cadets mainly because of parts availability and interchange. Mostly the 82 series (682,782,1210,1211,1710,1711,1810,1811). You can put almost any deck on them (38",42",44",46",48",50",54"). But my other choice if it had to be green would be JD 120, 140 or 318, just find that good mower decks are hard to come by and very pricey.

well most everybodies choice will be cub or Jd. But I always liked to be different. I have 2 White GT1650s (MTD990) tractors I'll put up against any made the same time period. They run 15" rear tires instead of those little 12". And these are HEAVY units. I also like Jacobsen/fords. I have 2 of those also. Both brands use the same hydo trans. The MTD has a Briggs and the Jacs use a Kohler. Years range in the early to mid 70s.

What do you want to do with it? If you want a true "garden" tractor those listed below are very good. If you only want to cut grass then a "lawn" tractor may be what you want. I have a JD 175 with the 14 hp Kawasaki that has been bulletproof. It cut 3 acres every other week until it got retired to cutting a half acre every week a couple of years ago. Had it since 1990.

Bolens 1886, HT18, HT20 or HT23.

Big, danged near indestructible, all use Kohler horiz opposed twin engines.

The are pretty much equivilent to todays SCUTs.

The Ariens/New Holland S and GT models are great garden tractors as are alot more around but the Ariens/NH GT are usually very reasonable to buy and almost all the attachments will interchange from the very first to the very last models built

The single cylinder Kohler's like to break rods right above the crank journal, otherwise bulletproof.

C series Wheel Horse. Not only are the tractors bullet proof but most parts and manuals are still available through Toro. Plus you can still find mower deck, snow blower, dozer blades and rototillers for them. If they have the optional sleeve hitch you can get many implements like plows, disk and back blades for the.

I had a couple of Cubs as workers before I got a Wheel Horse and the WH was so much easier to work on and cheaper to maintain. I know where a C120 with great mower deck, Snow Blower, winter soft cab that has the sleeve hitch is for sale right now. Hydro works well and the engine has about 100 hours on a rebuild. Rebuild included bored 10 over, new piston and rings, crank turned 10 under with a new rod plus the valves ground. It was mine, I sold it to a buddy who is now trying to sell it because he moved and has no further need of it. Tires are good with ag bar tires on it and tri ribs on the front. Could use new axle seals, a few dings removed paint and decals.

Located in west MN. He's looking to get 1K for everything.
