Tecumseh carbs

Ok, so I need to rebuild 2 tecumseh carbs and am a little lost. I am normally a briggs guy, so these are a little more complicated. I have another one on a massey 8 and am having trouble getting it tuned. I looked into the new ones on ebay and they seem reasonably priced. Is it easier or better to just get a new carb than to rebuild the old considering my inexperience with them? Or, anyone close to Quincy, Il that is really good at rebuilding them? any help is greatly appreciated.

If you have facility to soak them to get them clean, you should have no problems. Just use a sheet metal screw to grab the needle valve seat and pull it out of its bore. Be sure you make certain the idle passages are clean. There is usually a tiny hole in the center jet or needle that feeds the idle circuit. If your carbs have adjustable needles, open them 1-1/2 turns to start.
If they still surge, they are probably clogged up in the idle port. There is a welch plug over the idle port holes, remove the plug and clean behind it, there are usually 3 sometimes 4 holes bored through to the carburetor throat and also the passage back toward the main needle or jet. if its a fixed jet idle it can also have a jet in the same hole the old adjustable idle needle went into. it usually has a plug over the screw slot.

If the eng on the mf8 is a tecumseh hh80 with a walbro carb & the problem you're having is you can't adj idle with needle or eng surgeing with/without load there are two probable causes for these problems.

1-idle passage(s)in carb plugged/restricted as trk said.

2-if you removed main jet brass nozzle from carb body, idle supply hole in nozzle plugged or not lined up with idle supply passage, goto link below,if nozzle looks like nozzle on right, get a new service nozzle. If main jet nozzle looks like one on right in pic, look very carefully at threads, you will see a tiny hole drilled thru threads into center of nozzle, this hole is located within taper range of hi-speed needle & supplies gas to low speed/idle passages in carb,if you look at main jet casting you'll see a ridge on one side of casting & same will probably have a small brass plug on bottom corner, when carb built main jet nozzle screwed into carb body, then a small drill is inserted into hole in ridge & a hole is drilled thru threads in nozzle body, after hole drilled a brass plug is pressed into hole in ridge,if hole in threads doesn't line up with hole in casting when nozzle re-installed you will get no or little gas to idle circuit.

There are 3-4 different service nozzles for carb, you will need eng mod/spec# & tecumseh pn for carb to have local dealer lookup/order nozzle, same are gettig a little hard to come by & somewhat expensive,$12-$15 depending on pn of carb.

I believe you can still get parts from Hoebing s on south 12th in QCY-they are south of the park 1/2 mile.

so i looked at the disassembles massey carb and I had left the main jet in, so i attempted to remove it and it would not budge. stripped some of the slot out. so i blew in it and it let the air come through it. Am I safe to assume that, after cleaning the tiny hole, that I can put it back together and it will be ok? should I take out the welch plugs and clean?

If the carb has old style nozzle & hole in threads plugged, blowing air thru main jet nozzle usually won't clean same,IF there is no small brass plug on the side of ridge casting at bottom, then nozzle is probably newer style that is undercut.

IF you do have a brass plug on casting & can't get nozzle out, brass plug will have to be removed/drilled out & a thin pc of wire is then used to push thru hole in threads to clean out/check if clear, the brass plug may be avail as a replacement part if you drill out, you'll have to check with dealer,I drilled mine out, then tapped hole & installed a small brass machine screw in same.

Depending on pn of carb, you may have a welch plug(s) located in carb body inside bowl above float or a welch plug/brass plug located ext on carb body,in any case under plug a T is formed by three passages meeting, the long leg of T is gas supply from main jet, right arm goes to air bleed hole in venturi wall located behind choke plate, left arm goes to idle needle/jet.Usually one/more of the passages will plug up & the only way to clean/blow out all is to remove welch plug(s).The welch plug will have to be damaged/destroyed to remove, the plugs are avail as a seperate repair item, however most dealers don't carry plugs alone & will sell you carb rebuild which usually includes new welch plugs, check with dealer & see if can order seperate if you remove plugs and need replacment plugs.
