Vtwin Kohler

WE have a V twin Kohler in a Craftsman GT 5000 tractor. Engine surging. Runs good if you pull the choke out slightly. It appears that you can not adjust the carb. Any ideas?

There should be a shut off solenoid holding the bowl on the engine. Make sure that has power to it when the key is on. Make sure it is clicking when you turn the key to "on".

First, make sure the fuel pump it pumping fuel, if applicable. Make sure the gas isn't water.

Next, would be to clean out the carb. Make sure the needle and seat are moving properly. I would take the needle out and blow air backwards thru the seat. Sometimes crap gets stuck there. Do not blow air thru the fuel pump if it has one.

I had a Kawasaki do this. It corrected itself and I never found the problem.

Thanks. We've tried all the things you mentioned. May have to get a kit and tear carb totally apart. It was much simpler when you could turn a screw. I'm assuming the shut off switch either works or not. It has power. Could it be partially closed?

If you can hear a clicking sound, then it should be working.

Easiest way to check it is to remove it, hold it against the frame away from gas and turn the key. You should be able to see the plunger go up and down.

When you remove the shut-off solenoid, gas should drain from the bowl. If not, then gas is not getting to the bowl. If gas does drain from bowl, then a jet inside is clogged.

I am not sure how your fuel pump is set up. Check the vaccuum line for the fuel pump and make sure it isn't cracked.

A bad or incorrectly gapped sparkplug could also cause issues.

surgeing and quits when give lttle choke is simply jets plugged in carb. clean or replace the carb. kits nowdas are not much cheaper than complete carbs so check both ways. also check the intake manifold gaskets. but it usually is simple you don't have carb clean yet
