Ford LGT 100 garden tractor

Recently I did some contracting work for a customer and he gave me a Ford LGT 100 tractor to get rid of it. The tractor had been sitting for at least a decade. So far I took the gas tank off and found it was completely rusted through so I repaired it. The old gas valve was stuck in the off position so I purchased a new cut off valve and fuel line. The starter will engage and turn the engine over however I need to do a lot more cleaning before I attempt to start it.

My question is where can I find the serial number on this tractor so I can get an idea of the date of manufacture? Also other than changing the oil in the engine is there anything else I should do before I try to start it.

I would squirt some engine oil thru the sparkplug hole so the piston and cylinder are lubed. Then bump the engine over a few times before installing a new plug. Your carburetor probably needs a good cleaning and blow out the jets. Hal

Thanks for the information. I'm beginning to see this is going to be a major project getting this thing running. I got kind of anxious to find out if the motor would run so I put some gas in the tank to see if it would briefly start. I didn't get that far. I found out the ignition switch was toast so I bought a new one at Napa and it seem to be configured differently internally. Where the wire was suppose to go to the starter solenoid the new switch had it going to ground. There are other wires going nowhere so I think it would be easier to rewire it. Then there is a switch which you have to depress the brake to engage the starter. It was rusted solid. For now I just bypassed it. I don't understand why but the line to the starter solenoid was also connected to a toggle switch. Now while dealing with these electrical problems I noticed gas coming out of the carburetor onto the ground so El Toro was right about the carburetor needing to be overhauled. I had hoped since the gas had been cut off maybe the carburetor would be saved.

I will try again today to find the serial number. So far the only thing I can find is it has a Kohler K241AS motor.

Chances are, you will have to change the points (or at least file them).
Considering the condition you say the gas tank was in, I would get a kit and carefully rebuild the carburetor.
If It is labeled LGT-100 and not just Ford 100,
it was built by Jacobsen who furnished this style tractor to Ford from 1972 'til around 1985. Later Ford tractors were built by Gilson and, in my opinion were not as sturdy as the Jake models.
It will have a tubular frame and a driveshaft running back from the engine to a 90 degree gearbox.
I have several of this series which goes all the way up to 16 HP (LGT-165).
I'm not even sure where the serial number is located on these myself.
Very durable tractors!
These tractors have a mower deck which is the simplest to remove and install that I have ever seen!

Here is some pictures. I started yesterday looking for a parts supplier and haven't had much luck. I could use your recomendations.

Go to e-pay for parts....there is a guy on there who is always parting out these Ford tractors and he is a good one to deal with.

I have a Ford LGT100 of the same vintage as yours.Rugged old guy.Built by Jacobsen. If you go to Yahoo and search for Ford/Jacobsen tractor groups you will find guys who are very knowledgeable about these. One fellow has a DVD that covers repair/service/refurbishing. I don"t remember where the serialnumber is but it will have a number like 09JC-xxxxx.These had Kohler K241 10hp engines and parts are readily available. Mine is a 1972(?) and I"d guess yours is the same vintage. Good luck.
