Case 222 .... is this a good price?

My neighbour is selling his dad's 222 Case yard mower. They've had it for some time out at their lake acreage but have upgraded to a newer JD that they bought at an auction. Looks in good shape with good rubber, starts and runs well, engine sounds a bit noisy, especially compared to newer stuff I have looked at. They are asking $600, is that a fair price to start at for bargaining?

Meanwhile, any things about the 222 that a guy might be red-flagged about and to look for when I look at it more closely? How about replacement parts, are they readily available at a reasonable cost?

Without any photos, it is not easy for anyone to judge the value of this tractor. Condition is important. Does the engine smoke? If so, when does it smoke and what is the colour of that smoke?

What condition is the seat in? How much free play is there in the steering? How does it drive? What kind of cut does the deck give? Is the deck noisy? How does the deck clutch feel when you engage it? You should have to push strongly at first and then the lever should pop-over into the engaged position.

Personally, I'm with Gary.. I think that the asking price is high and $400.00 is more in tune with what these normally sell for unless they are in exceptional shape.

Parts are not a problem for them. A Kohler K will be noisier than a modern engine but the K will out perform the modern engine.

If it has hydraulic drive...the hudraulic motors
DO wear out, causeing slippage, loss of power,
oil overheating. but are easily replaced. If so
replace oil and filters also..as old oil, full of wear metallic particles, will case new motors
to wear faster !
