I bought a newer 50 inch deck for my 1250. It has a vibration in it bad and keeps eating the drive belt. I replaced the bent up Mule and both small idler pulleys and new blades. It still vibrates bad. The center drive spindle does have some play in it. I pulled it a part last night. The spindle seems tight but when the retainer with 3 bolts that mount it to the deck it then has play in it but not much. If that is normal then I think the double pulley is the problem. It has three ripples in it 1/3 apart from each other. I think some one used a 3 jaw puller in it at some time. If I replace that pulley do you think my vibration and belt eating will stop? I do not have any part numbers on the pulley. I do not have any info on the deck after some one repatented it. So how do I tell which 50 inch deck I have? IT looks like 3 different decks were made and 2 different pulleys were used. Mine is 5 inch top pulley and the other is 4/1/2 inch. I am using a1/2 x82 inch belt is that the right length belt to be using. The first two belts were to long till the replacement Mule drive springs got cleaned up and stated to making more spring pressure. Thanks for any help you can provide. Northeast Puller. |

| northeast puller:
The 1250 would have used a model "50A" mower deck.
Here is the correct information for your deck...

| Thanks Guys. dhermesc the bearing flange is bolted tight to the deck. The spindle has some movement with in the flange but not the bearing and shaft. It is the whole thing moves with in the flanges. I take it as that the shaft size on all the pulleys is the same and the only difference is 4 inch or 5 inch pulley diameter? |

| | The mandrel shaft size is the same on all 50A decks. I've had to replace the center pulley on my deck as it worked its way loose then would nolonger sit tight on the shaft. I found a NOS one on E-bay and it has worked great. R Beddle is an excellent source for information on Cubs. |

| | Most likely the bent pulley is causing your belt eating problem - coupled with the loose retainer it is also causing your vibrations. If I understood your posting the three bolts that hold the pulley in place are loose? If so had some washers and get it tight. A 1250 will use a 3/8" belt on the mule drive - that could also be one of your problems with the belt being very short lived - a 1/2" belt is too wide. As for the center drive pulley - you can use either one without an appreciable difference. I have the "speed up" pulley on my 1450 with the 50A deck but at one time it had the "slow" pulley. http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=cub_cadet&mn=44%22%2C+50%22+3+Blade+Deck&dn=0072400002

| Have you got the right pulley on your deck to match the tractor? I can't remember for sure, but some of that era use a different thickness of belt for the different model of tractors. I know the 82 series uses a larger (thicker) belt, but not sure of when the switch was made. |

| I would guess the pulley is the problem. I had a deck pulley that the spot weld broke on one side causing it to open slightly. It would eat a new belt in 20 minutes. When replacing the center pulley there is a smaller pulley that is supposed to make the mower cut better. Depending on the when your deck was made, top pulley may be about a 5". The replacement is about 4". Makes the deck run faster. |
