cadet 1215 selenoid

The starter keeps running all the time on my old Cub Cadet 1215. Even with a new key switch. When the switch is disconneted the starter engages as soon as the battery cable makes contact with the battery. Is it a bad selenoid? Does anyone know what is doing his?

Did you get the correct ignition switch? There are atleast 30 different ignition switches that all look the same. Make sure you have the correct ignition switch or put the old one back in for now.

Test one: Unplug the plug from the back of the ignition switch. Try putting cable on battery. If starter engages, then I would say the solenoid is bad.

Disconnect the wire from the solenoid to the ignition switch. If the starter still wants to engage, then I would say the solenoid is bad.

If you have a multimeter, with the battery + disconnected, measure ohms from one side of the solenoid to the other side. One side of the solenoid should be a wire from the battery +. The other side should go to the starter. It should say 0. Anything more than 0 and the solenoid is bad.

You could try firmly tapping the solenoid to see if it will unstick the contacts. But, more than likely it will need to be replaced if that is the problem.

Do you have a Delco starter/generator? Some of those solenoids that are used with a SG won't let you crank the engine unless a pedal is depressed to ground the starting circuit. My Wards tractor has the SG and it kept cranking and it was the solenoid that caused it. It killed the battery before I could pull a battery cable. It was in my mini-barn when I tried to shut down the engine and I couldn't raise the hood. That was several years ago. Hal
It hasn't done that lately
