Witha B&S engine that, opn the plate has tamped 19 706025
What does the flywheel mount to in the inside, next to the engine. I can see nothing. Ive rotated it on the shaft and nothing clcked into place. I know the big nut holds it into place, but I was just wondering before I put the hood back on if the flywheel connected to something in the back of it.

ALSO Does the flywheel have to be in a certain place on the shaft?? For timeing purposes??

How old is this engine. Those numbers look odd to me.

Briggs should have more numbers.

Model xxxxxx
Type xxxx-xx
Code xxxxxxxxx

I would need to see a pic to understand what you are trying to describe.

Briggs has used the same timing, similar ignition and flywheel since atleast the 1950s to the best of my knowledge. I have only seen a few engines older than 1970. The flywheel normally has a sheer key holding the timing in place on the crankshaft.

Post a pic or more numbers and I will try to make an educated guess at what you are asking for.

I think it would be connected to the crankshaft.
There's probably an armature and points in that area. Hal

IF you can rotate flywheel on crankshaft, shaft key either sheared/missing,on the old mod19 briggs eng the flywheel key was located on face of flywheel as flywheel timing was adjustable, there is a tab on bottom of key that locks into keyway on crank,if eng a 190000 series eng flywheel key was a sq key that went into crank/flywheel keyway.Goto link below & look at pic,see if this is flywheel key you have/are missing, ign timing instructions in text.
flywheel

That's probably because briggs hasn't made a number series eng(9-23)for at least 45 yrs & probably stopped makeing long before you were born.

The other numbers is 197966

I read you insruction list joe and it said to use a timeing light. Dont have one. Dont matter, as I cant be on the R side with the flywheel while watching for the points to START to open, Not that I could see them START to open anyway.

Have to take it n to the shop.

Thanks fo the answers. No way to post pcs

For a timing light they mean a battery powered test light/condinuity tester or you could use an ohmmeter as you are turning eng by hand, leave coil lead & condenser disconnected from points terminal screw when doing this as you could get a false reading with coil/condenser connected, connect test light/ohmmeter between points terminal & eng block or if eng has elect start/battery connect a 12V test light between battery pos(+) and points screw terminal, coil lead & condenser MUST be disconnected from points when doing this way or you'll burn out mag coil with 12v.

What u have is a model 19 Briggs there is no flywheel key with piston all the way up the pin on flywheel Should be at 10:30 position then tighten big nut very tight 130 foot pounds or 150 don"t rember exact torque when tight the starter cup locks the nut the timming is done before flywheel goes on if you look at coil armature you see lines with the number 9 or 14 or 19 or 23 on the magnet on crank there is on line.adjust points to proper gap using test light or ohm meter as explained in previous reply. When points just open those mark on armature should line up to 19 which is what model Briggs u have
