can I put a electric clutch on?

I bought a 2005 Troy Built 21 hp riding mower. The orginal deck was abused and not worth repairing plus the shaft that runs down thru the dash to engage the deck is broke off. The tractor is in good shape, two speed automatic. I found a real good 48 inch deck that will go under it but it is made for a mower with a electric clutch. No manual engage. Can I put an electric clutch under this mower and if so what in involved to do so? Any help will be appricated

Most tractors with manual PTO use a alternator that will only keep the battery charged. If you put a electric PTO on use must upgade your alternator to one with higher amps.

You're probably better off locateing/buying a used manual deck on ebay/craigslist or if deck shell not rotted out or bent/twisted consider rebuilding same & replaceing engage cable/rod in addition as bill said possibly having to replace alt stator & voltage reg for same you'll have to do some rewiring on tractor & add a sw for clutch.

The next problem is the drive for deck/trans,you probably have a 2 belt stack pulley on eng crankshaft with/without a depressed/recessed center for bolt to hold on crankshaft, this pulley must be removed & electric clutch installed on crank, after that you still need a pulley to drive trans, either you'll have to install a fixed bore pulley on crank or deal with mtd about getting the an oem clutch assembly that has both pulleys as part of assembly,as in many installations with a stack pulley one of the pulleys may extend below end of crank,in which case you'll have belt alignment problems.

Personally I would go with the correct used deck or rebuilding old deck as cost of pto alone is probably well over $100 in addition to time, money & parts needed for conversion & the possibility same may not work or you'll have mech problems to sort out with same.

Best bet is usually to look for one like yours that someone has blown out the transxle or run the engine without oil and buy/carry it off for parts.

I have a 2000 troy build, 20 hp briggs, 46 in mower and it came with an electric clutch. It isn't an a hydrostatic. It has a forward and reverse in the transaxle and the tranny is 2 belts and a variable pulley system. The harder you push on the peddle, the faster you go.

If the electric clutch fits, I would say use it.
