My briggs 23d has no spark, I replaced plug point/condensor, and was able to find a good coil-thanks to friends. The key switch wire is unhooked at the points. The key grounds to shut off, right? the key doesnt provide power at all to ignition, right? All power for spark comes through coil as flywheel turns, right? Points are clean and set at 20. What gives? Any ideas?Does the engine even need a ground other than for the starter? Thanks

The ign sw grounds points/coil to stop eng,ign system is self powered off flywheel magnets,do to fact this is/was a pre-existing problem before replaceing plug, points, condenser & coil there are a few things that could cause no spark problem.

1-push pin(plunger)for points broken or pin worn & sticking in bushing

2-point cover shorting to points/point wire(if installed with/without stop sw on same)

3-insulation on wire from points to coil nicked or insulation missing allowing wire to short to block/sheetmetal cover(s)

4-if eng has insulated screw terminal on flywheel cover backplate where point wire/coil wire connect together screw loose or insulator bad allowing point lead/coil lead to short to ground.

5-incorrect armature/flywheel air gap.

6-weak flywheel magnets.

7-if flywheel loosened/removed armature/flywheel timing needs to be checked/reset as flywheel timing is adjustable on 23D.

Also add to list in previous reply-flywheel key bent/sheared and ign timing has changed or flywheel spinning on crankshaft.

That coil that your friends found may be the culprit. Check the magnets for magnetism if they're weak buy an auto type coil and run battery voltage to a switch then to the auto type coil and to the points. Disconnect the armature wire at the points. Hal

I also have a 23d with no spark, I"m looking for a replacement coil, but hard to find for me. I wish it were as easy as using the magnatron, I thought of maybe someone could modify the coil mounting plate so it could work

thanks for all your help- I finally got enough spark to see at plug but not enough to fire in engine and gave in and put a battery ignition system on, like my trusty wheel horses with Kohlers. thanks again for your help
