Garden tractor conversion to electric?

I was looking at an old thread about the Electrac lawn tractor..wow! I wonder if anyone has converted a gas lawn tractor to electric successfully. My interest is not to mow by the hour, but to ride around the acreage with a cart load of tools or to pick up sticks, etc.

It has been done but run-time is always the issue. MOST of the Elec Traks used SIX deep discharge 6 volt batteries wired in series to deliver 48 volts to the drive motor. The drive motor was connected to the trans-axle via a V belt. Only a few of the small Elec Traks used three 12 volt deep discharge batteries in series to achieve the needed 48 volts.

The problem you face is ROOM for the batteries and then you will need the motor, controller and heavy cables. By all means, choose a true garden tractor and not a lawn tractor for this project.

I have an EZ-GO electric golf cart that is perfect for what you want to do. I picked up this cart and battery charger for $100. I spent another $280 for 6ea 6volt rebuilt batteries.

I'm pleased with my rig.

6 batteries at 6v each will give you 36v total, 8 at 6v each is 48v or 3 at 12v is 36v and 4 at 12v is 48v. Just to keep you honest Tom.

As an E-20 Elec Trak owner, I confess that I have no excuse for
making those errors in that post. LOL

YES..... 36 volts is the correct operating voltage, not 48. Thanks for
correcting that silly error.

I have no idea what I was thinking at the time.

Rick,
Apparently so but the question is why? LOL It was bad enough
to say 48 but to screw up on the math is unforgivable. ROFL

Tom, you can use one of my excuses, either I am 71 years old and don't remember or I have a terminal case of CRS.
