JD 455 mower: Are the ball joints really half metric and ...

Am I believing my eyes or is this a dream? I need to replace the ball joints on my Deere 455 lawn tractor, and I went to measure the threads on the ends. I'm measuring one side as 5/8-18 national fine thread, and the opposite end (the one with the ball attached) as M16-2. Is this another one of Deere's ploys to force us to buy parts from them? Any ideas on where to find these (besides Deere)? Thanks

Thanks, So far, I've removed two of these ball joints from my lawn mower (I believe that there are a total of five of them, all identical). on the ones that I removed, all threads are right hand.

I think I solved the problem and bought these:

Both threads are 5/8-18 - should work fine - I'll know when I get them. Just can't believe that any reputable manufacturer would do this. Reminds me of my David Brown tractor that is half metric and half SAE - a pain to work on.

You can repair them at no cost to you. Place the ball joint in a vice then take a center punch. With the center punch Peen around the opening where they mate together. Just be carefull that you do not over tighten them. I have done this on quite a few Ball Joints.

And then drill a hole in the back side and grease them with your gun for chain saw roller tip cutting bar.

they are left and right so you can adjust the rods without removing ,same as tie rods on your car
