A fellow brought me a garden tractor, said the tranny sounded like it was being squeezed when he ran it around! Sort of a soft groan, hi-pitched, sounded like the brass gears sound at times. I can't really describe that noise, but maybe some one might know what i mean. I declined the job. Anybody ever hear that kind of noise, or know what i am describing? The tractor is orange, rear Onan engine twin, And i just can't remember the name of it. I think the wrong gear lube may have been put in the tranny. Like the old Troy-bilt tillers. They had brass gears, and took special tranny oil. |

| If it is a gravely, we need more info. There were 2 different transmissions, big and little. Most of the 2 bangers were the big tranny. On either side, are clutch discs, that would be my first check, see what the lining looks like, and if they are loose. I can't remember whether it was bushings, or bearings. Also, there was a simple clip, that when worn, would make her squeal. |

| Gravely garden tractors were orange with white hoods and they used Onan twins mounted behind the driver, low down. |

| Yep, it was a Gravely. Thanks for jogging my memory. And, it had the Onan engine. You folks described it exactly. The job was way over my head, since i don't like to get involved with something that i know little, or less, about. They took it to a place i told them about, that handles the larger tractors. Must be ok--i haven't heard any complaints. RJ |
