JD 214 hydraulic lift question

I have an opportunity to purchase a late model JD 214 with the hydraulic lift option and only having electric lift on mine, if anyone who may have one with the hydraulic system can tell me how reliable this system is and/or any problems that have had or could have with it. Not sure what year it is but it has the electric PTO clutch. The owner's notes on it state "has oil leak" and "misses when mowing sometimes". Looks real clean and was purchased brand new by the owner. Will have more information later this weekend. Asking price is $500.00 or OBO. Any assistance is always appreciated.

Late model is a relative term. First year for the electric PTO clutch was 1982 and last year for the 200 series was 1987. The 214 was a good tractor. The hydraulic lift is the best thing about that tractor, and a 200 series hydraulic lift system goes for $300-$400 by itself.

Oil leak and missing when mowing are not good signs. I would try to get there early and walk around the tractor. See if that oil leak is engine oil, hydraulic oil, or transaxle fluid.

I have a 112 with the a hydraulic lift. For mowing it isn't that much different from my electric lift 112.

NOW... When it comes time to put the blade on it.... There is no comparison! The hydraulic lift is just plain nice! Easy operation, easy control, smooth operating. More certain feathering and stopping than the electric. Just plain likeable. Mine drops the implement in about an hour when not running. I don't know if that is the cylinder or the valves but it doesn't matter. Mower height is set mechanically just like on the manual and electric lift models and with the blade... it's always being changed anyhow so it is never noticed.

I got a hyd lift on a 216 an believe me its the berries I got a snow blade an it great for that an a tiller an its a real blessing if u ever lifted a tiller with a manual lift

ive had a couple of 214s with hydraulic lifts. both of them had the same leak, the reservoir has a pressed fitting for the hydraulic hose and after years of vibration and use the press fit fitting loostens up. i brazed mine and stopped the leaks. other than that the only other thing is when removing the reservoir you should replace the hose. its the best system for plows, tillers, etc
