Just bought an 1988 john deere 420 garden tractor, hour meter shows 632 hours,is original. How do you know if it has not been disconected and run or must it be connected to run, thanks.

The tractor and engine will run just fine with the hour meter unhooked or not working.

There really isn"t anyway to tell for sure if the previous owner had the meter unhooked, or replaced, except to look closely at it and see if you can find wrench marks, or marks where the wires have been removed from the terminals, and then put back on. 600 hours on something like that isn"t un heard of, but its also possible to find one of the same age with 2000 hours on it too. You can take things into consideration like wear on the throttle controls, the forward reverse lever, brake pedals, floor boards where feet rest, and even the tires.

The 420 is one of the best garden tractors JD put out, and the Onan engine in it is pretty good. Pricey when it does break, but pretty dependable overall. The transmission is pretty tough as well. About the only model thats any better is the 430, which had a 3 cylinder yanmar Diesel instead of the 2 cylinder Gas yours has.

If it blew up tomorrow and you did a $1400.00 repower, you would still have a good tractor 20 years from now.
