i have a 18 hp briggs twin opposed vertical shaft in a garden tractor. it is leaking very bad where the bottom case goes together. how hard to fix?what to use for gasket sealer?

Drain engine, lay it on it's back door, remove pan bolts(don't miss the one in the hole)and work pan off crankshaft, clean and dry gasket surfaces and replace gasket(I'm "old school"..I still use Permatex gasket cement)on both sides.Reassemble, tighten bolts and replace in tractor. You do not need to strip anything off engine except pulley and"some"mufflers. These motors were designed to be field servicable about anywhere. You'll need deep 1/2 socket, gasket scraper/putty knife, and prolly a screwdriver or such to help separate cases.

The hardest part will likely be getting the pulley off. Clean the shaft good, (I often use a fine grit sandpaper) before removing the pan. Just my 2 cents.

And, do not use Blue Goo, in place of the gasket!! It won't work! Use a new gasket, the same as the old one! A VERY LIGHT coat of Indian head shellac can be used to hold it in place.
