I have a Craftsman garden tractor (mid to late '90's) with koler engine and hydrostatic transmission. Tractor was moving in reverse. I stopped, shifted into forward and tractor does not move. Shifted back to reverse and tractor does not move. Drive belt not broke.

Anyone have any ideas on what happened or what to look for?

Some hydros have a wire or lever to pull to "free" the hydro for pushing. Tractors won't push without pulling it. Maybe yours shook it's way out? You pulled while changing something? Tall weeds or grass pulled on it??
Is there any shear pins in drive pulley or wheels themselves? Look to see if input shaft is turning with the pulley. A broken pin will allow pulley to move, just won't drive shaft.
 
Check that shaft keys on both rear axles that connect tire rim to axle aren't sheared/missing,if either key sheared/missing tractor won't move.
 
Check to make sure the lever you are moving with your hand is actually moving the lever on the hydro.

I doubt that you have a low fluid problem because you should have got some sort of jerkiness while operating it previously. However, leave no stone unturned. Check the fluid level.

As mentioned, it only takes ONE sheared axle key to prevent the tractor from moving. Same holds true with the pulley being driven by the belt coming from the engine.

If all of those things check out OK, then I would conclude that the problem is internal. It may be something in the differential that has failed. Try to get the make and model number off the trans-axle and then go to their website to see if there is a parts manual available.

At this point, you have nothing to lose by taking the trans-axle apart to see what failed. Perhaps all you need are a few parts replaced.
 
I worked on a Craftsman once that stopped pulling like that and it turned out the front strap holding the transmission was broken and the transaxle had twisted forward enough the belt would not turn the transaxle.

Another thought is whether the dump or freewheel valve has been opened. On craftsman they usually stick out of the rear of the tractor somewhere, and you usually push it in to close it.
