LX 178 John Deere Not starting

Hi

My 1997 LX178 will not start.Good spark and fuel is pumping.

I removed the valve cover (s) and the upper push rod (s) on both cyclinders have dropped.

What type of repair am I into?

Thank you!

Thank you
Clyde

If your push rods are straight, just re install by hand pushing on spring and adjust them to spec.Deere made some kind of update for this problem but i don't know anything about it.I cant remember the gap. Some other YT users should be able to help.

From what you describe about all 4 push rods dropping without make/mod of eng I suspect same a kohler, depending on age/mod of eng you probably have hyd lifters, eng may have adjustable/non adjustable rocker arm lash,in addition some eng had a full pressure lube system to supply oil to lifters when cranking eng, your problem could be dirty/sticky lifters allowing same to leak/collaspe or a problem in lube system,if eng a kohler goto link below & see if a service/repair manual avail as a free download for your mod eng, also try going to www.weekendfreedommachines.com,this is a website for jd tractors, join forum & post question on one of the boards that best deals with your mod tractor, this might be a common problem for this mod tractor & there may be a fix/mod kit avail from deere/kohler for your problem.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for getting back to me.

Re: LX178 Kawasaki V440

My problem was the intake valve(s) were gummed up and sticking. This was a result of old gas. I as able to free them up with some WD40.

I just need some help on adjustinting the valves. Looking for a PDF shop book to help me out. How do you find top dead centre? I believe the valve clearance is .25mm on a cold engine.
