LS55 FORD charging problem

I have a LS55 Ford with a Kohler cv18s engine that is over charging the battery, at high idle it will show 14.7 volts if you engage the pto it will jump to 15.1 to 15.3 volts, the ac voltage will stay near 30 volts, I have cleaned all connections and grounds ,I have put temporary grounds to the regulator, I replaced the regulator and I am still getting a charge light when the pto is engaged, I would expect the voltage to drop when the pto is on,any ideas?

Is the battery boiling over? IMHO, 14.7 to 15.3 Volts may NOT be extreme, NOT sure, offhand, what the factory spec is.

Are you relying on a digital meter? An ANALOG meter or a QUALITY digital meter is needed to make an ACCURATE reading in the NOISY electrical environment around that engine.

Also, you can go to KohlerEngines.com and download the shop manual for FREE (in.pdf) format to get the factory "specs" and troubleshooting procedures.

(You have to drill down though a couple of menus to get there, but it's worth it to have the genuine factory information.)

Check current draw of clutch coil, should probably be between 3.25-4A,if coil drawing more than 4A,you may have a ground/shorted turns in coil or possibly a shorted coil in clutch monitor relay, the charging system may be responding to excessive current draw of clutch as the clutch, clutch monitor relay,hr meter & voltage monitor for charge lite are all connected to same line which has a 10A fuse on same,if clutch coil grounded/shorted it will put a higher demand on charging system but not enough to blow fuse, regulator will respond by trying to supply extra current/voltage to battery & electrical system, check with local toro dealer,he may be a to give you correct current draw of coil, while there check with him about high charge voltage, this may be a common problem on this mod tractor & there may be a factory service notice about same, also make sure you don't have a tired/weak battery.

Kohler says the charging voltage is not to exceed 14.7 volts. I think your clutch on your pto is the problem. Hal
