IH Cub Cadet 124 Wiring....No Juice...Loose Wires?

Hey guys. I have a Cub Cadet 124 I am working on, and it has been running great as well as the generator charges great according to the gauge. The whole time I've had it, it acts up though. Sometimes you'll go to crank it and it will spin and crank the engine fine. Other times you'll go to crank it and it has no juice and does absolutely nothing. It acts as if there is no battery hooked up at all!! I have a BRAND NEW battery in it. I don't know what I do to make it work, but if I scoot the battery back and forth and wiggle a couple wires behind the dash; it'll all of a sudden get power again and crank. All of the wires seem to be very tight connections. I did, however notice a couple wires that were unplugged; but I don't think thats the case.

RTR:

Just because the wire connections are tight does not mean they make a good contact.

To make sure, they need to be CLEAN (polished) and tight. Also, check the battery cable connections on both ends. Bad or poor grounding on any Garden Tractor that age is a common problem.

Check those wires on your key start to make sure they're clean and tight. If you have a starter solenoid it may be the problem. I would clean all the terminals and wire ends on it. You may have a grounding problem on your solenoid if it has one. I have the starter/generator setup on my garden tractor and that's the the way the solenoid works on it. When I twist the key to crank the engine it grounds the solenoid and battery voltage is fed to the S/G and once the engine starts you release the key start and then the solenoid isn't grounded and then the S/G becomes just a generator charging the battery. Problem could be caused by loose/dirty or bad battery cables,loose/bad ext connections on ammeter, loose internal connections of meter, bad ign sw,safety sw,loose connections or bad sol, sticking brushes/worn brushes in s/g,if you need wiring diag of tractor, goto link below, click on cub cadet logo, enter 124 in mod# on left side of pg,click on wiring diag from assembly drawings/parts list,view/print same

I think you will find that the wires at the key switch are the problem--known for corrosion. Unplug the 3 wire connector and you will see either a rusty terminal (usually the battery wire) or the terminal on the key switch itself is ready to break off. The extra wire in the harness is probably the lead for electric lift.

Thanks guys. THose wires on that tractor are soooo hard to get to the way they are ran, I'll have to wait til I have more time to tear it down to rewire it. Its also the origninal harness thats wrapped in the original casing, so its kinda difficult to figure out where each wire is going. I've gotta get my Super A painted first thing so I can get it back together and put away before the coooollld weather hits. I will let you all know if I have any trouble once I start on the wiring.
