just looking for help here witch you guys have been great. looking to see how much work it is to pull the motor out of my case 446 with 16hp onan. to replace the starter. cant believe i have to pull the motor. ? is there more to it than just the motor mounts. ??do i have to aliene any thing up when put back together.first time ever doing this so all the help the better thanks again to every one for the help in advance.have a good day scott.

You do not have to pull the engine. Take off the PTO, move the oil cooler out of the way, I think I removed the front motor mount bolts, took off the flywheel screen then unbolted the flywheel shroud. One bolt on the starter was easy to get out, other was tougher but it comes out with a box wrench. Lift front of engine up a little to give a little working room. Took about 1 1/2 hours to do.

Just wondering, did you try taking jumper cables direct to the starter? If and when you change the starter, try it once it is bolted in and the flywheel shroud is back on before putting PTO and oil cooler back on. The one bolt is very hard to get at but with patience you can get starter unbolted. Make sure the safety switch on the movement lever is working--put it in neutral and push down or pull up to make sure that's not the problem.

I removed mine without pulling motor but it is a job. like the other guy said is about 1 1/2 hour job. turned out the brushes were wore out put a set of good brushes in does fine now.

i did get it out and it was the problem to it all apart and the wire in the starter were all gon and most of the magnet thanks once again for all your help and replys scott.the only other problem is i need a diagram of the clutch assemble to it apart and do not want screw it up when putting back together thanks again scott.

I thought of that when I did it. Drew it out on a piece of paper as I took it apart. Adjusting it was the tough part.
