i've got a late model jd 316 w/ an onan and was mowing last weekend battery light came on finished mowing and put batt on charge and it won't take a charge anymore so got new batt and the batt light is still on. so now i'm pretty sure its got a charging issue. currently i don't have the repair manual but i'm going to borrow my uncles but his is for an earlier model 318. can anyone point me to where you can/how to test for charging on a 316 looks to be a plug by the front of the motor for the stator wires and i think i can test across that? but from there i'm at a loss for where to test. anyhelp would be great.

If that plug is from your stator you can check for the AC voltage there. Should be around 30 volts. If that checks ok there's nothing wrong with your stator. You can check the charging voltage across the battery terminals with the engine at 3/4 throttle. Be careful when checking the AC voltage when the engine is running. You should also have a rectifier/regulator that converts the AC voltage to DC. The rectifier is probably the culprit, but I would clean all those wire connections on the rectifier to make sure its not a bad connection. That's what I found on a JD140. Hal

Here's a wiring diagram for the JD 312, 314 & 316. Hal

I had a similar situation when the ignition switch went bad on my allis chalmers. I bought a rectifier/regulator and that did not help. The charge has to go thru the switch to get to the battery.
