JD 214 fuel line/fuel filter question

I intend to install a JD fuel filter (Part #AM107314)in the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump. In looking at this filter it appears two sizes of line (1/4 & 5/16 inch?) are at each end. I'll be using the larger size that is closes to the body of the filter. My question is do I want to remove the smaller end (1/4 inch) by cutting of sawing it off before installing it in the fuel line or install it as it is? Something tells me if I cut off the smaller end the filter or ends might crack or break. Any information regarding this is greatly appreciated. Please tell me your story if you used this filter.

Why bother. The 1/4" barb will just slide right inside the 5/16 hose. The inside diameter is the same right up to the actual filter cavity.

The filter fits either size line, since you
have a fuel pump, may I suggest adding a second filter, from pump output to carb. My JD 111
ran good, conked out, let sit, ran good.

Trouble was ... dirt * from * fuel pump was
entering carb. When I drained line ... flakes of metal corrosion. The second filter has a fringe benefit, you can see pump output .
