bolens st160 charging problem

bolens st160

My 80's era Bolens st 160 (16 hp twin, B/S) is not charging correctly i think. At mid/hi idle i get 12.5-13.8 volts ok until i engage the magnetic clutch for the deck. Voltage drops to 12.2 even with throttle wide open. Can the mag. clutch be shorted drawing too many amps or what???

Yes, the clutch coils can partially short and draw too much current

Can you check the current draw of the clutch?

Don't have an EXACT figure, would GUESS in the 3 - 5 Amp range would be normal.

COULD be stator, rectifier/regulator or wiring/switch issues, as well.

Could be the clutch coil or charging system, best thing to do is goto a bolens dealer & see if he can give you resistance value of coil & normal current draw for same, then check resistance/current draw of coil with a vom,if coil checks ok,then get a briggs service/repair manual that covers your mod eng,in alt section it will tell you how to id/troubleshoot charging system on eng,you may have a problem in rectifer/regulator or alt stator, also if battery 3-4 yrs old check with a hydrometer or remove & have load tested, same may be over the hill & can't handle current draw demands on tractor.

I would double check all ground connections, starting at the battery. A poor ground will cause all sorts of problems with * any * electric / electronic device. Positive wiring gives little trouble, its those rusty grounds,
most grounding is by chance when new.
