battery size

The biggest and highest CCA that you can fit in. I have in the past used lawn mower battery's in tractors and car battery's in riding lawn mowers. Size does not matter but voltage does so the bigger the better as far as cranking power

Measure the battery box, and get a battery that fits in it. remember to measure height, and keep in mind the posts stick up on top, you don"t want them contacting the hood when you close it.

If you have a NAPA auto parts around, then have a book that lists garden tractors and industrial equipment, and what batteries they take.

But a large car battery will fit in there, I have one in mine. I don"t know the exact size, but it just fits in the battery box. I never had a lot of luck with those little lawn and garden batteries. These machines were designed for a larger battery, and often need the extra cranking amps of a larger battery to get that heavy Kohler turning over fast enough to start. Espeically if you have cold winters and a snowblower on it. You can"t beat those machines for durability.

http://www.oldgravelys.net will have all the manuals and info you"ll ever need for it, if you don"t have them already.
Gravely walkbehnd manuals

Plus if it matters, a lawn mower battery is a 1 year warrenty, car, truck battery is 3+ years. Measure it and get a better battery.

I get mine from Walmart it's their best battery.
You can see it in this picture and its 8 years old. Hal
