JD 214 slow moving

Drive belt came off the other day. Replaced the primary belt, secondary belt and the drive pulley sheave. Adjusted the variator according to the operators manual. Now the tractor moves very slow. Running in 4th is like being in second. The brake pedal doesn't seem to be coming up all the way while running but every now and then it will pop up so the tractor takes off then stays down when I step on it. Is there a spring I should look at replacing or something I overlooked? Also the first 3 notches on the variator don't seem to have any resistance or change the speed then in the 5th notch the tractor will stop.

You may need to replace the big spring that makes the variator work and or the spring that makes the secondary belt idler work, but check a couple other things first.

You need to make sure the whole variator assembly can swing backward and forward freely, and that the middle sheave slides from side to side and also turns on the middle of the variator freely. Adjustments won't help if it's bound up. Use only dry graphite lube on the variator.

The instructions for adjusting the variator are a little confusing, in my opinion. You should take the spark plug wire off, put the variator lever in the fifth notch from the back, loosen the bolt in the front hole on the side of the console, and crank the engine until the clutch pedal comes up as far as it will. Then while pushing down toward the ground, tighten that bolt.

OK so the center turns and moves side to side but will clean the shaft and relube as it seems a little tight. Now on the mounting bolt - the long bolt that holds the assembly to the frame - there are two brass bushings inside the bracket. Should they be spinning freely inside or are they pressure fitted? Tried the mower the other day and it picked up speed a little better but then would slow down on its own. Right now the unit is apart with the motor hanging in the air as I need to replace a couple of motor mounts. Also makes access to the variator easier. Sorry to say this unit has not had the best of care in some time. Sits outside 365/24/7 and doesn't get the TLC it needs until it is too late. Still keeps on going but not always up to her potential. Most days she will out run the 317 but not now.

So figured out the 2 bushings are press fit but needed to be cleaned up along with the mounting bolt. Amazing what a little bit of graphite powder will do to loosen up the sheave. Had to replace 3 of the 4 motor mounts but now she is running like she should be. Thanks for the tip on the variator system.
