LX 176 carb problems, needs choke to run.

My son's LX 176 is not running very well. If it was one of my Waterloo tractors, I'd say that the idle passage in the carb was blocked. It surges and needs the choke partially closed to run except under load.

I've looked at the parts list, CARBURETOR (MARKED 32124) this is the carb, but I wanted to ask the group for suggestions.

Thanks

I would be willing to bet that a new carb will NOT fix the problem. If this carb is a fixed let unit, it was most likely calibrated for PURE gasoline. Now with the introduction of 10% ethanol, which REDUCES the BTU'S per unit volume of the fuel, the jet are now not big enough to supply the needed fuel to the engine. Try running 89 or 91 octane fuel. The introduction of ethanol is not that much of a problem on fuel systems that can be adjusted whether the adjustment is done with a needle valve or by a computer controlled feedback system.
I have seen this problem on the Flat Twin Briggs engines and one of the last Tecumseh OHV engines with a fixed jet carb. The ONLY solution for both was to drill the jets out with very small NUMBERED drill bit sets.
As I mentioned above try the higher octane fuel as they have more BTUs per unit volume than 87 octane.
