Wheel Horse Charger 12 NOT charging

New User
I have a Wheel Horse Charger 12 Automatic that will not charge the battery.

The engine is a Kohler 12
Model # 301S
Spec# 47421b

A sticker by the starter says it is equipped with a 15 amp alternator.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!!

Disconnect 3 prong plug at rectifer/regulator,start eng, measure voltage at 2 outside prongs of connector, with eng running full throttle, should read 20V + AC,if less stator bad,if you have more than 20V then rectifer/regulator bad, goto link below & download a service/repair manual for K series eng,in elect section will show different charging systems & how to troubleshoot.

Here's a wiring diagram for Kohler. Hal

You need to check for the AC voltage from the stator at the rectifier using a volt meter set on AC volts. With the engine at 1/2 throttle or better you should see 20 volts some have 30. If you're getting AC voltage on those 2 outside terminals on the rectifier there's nothing wrong with the stator. Then see what your charging voltage is across the battery terminals with your volt meter on Dc volts you see around 14.0 volts with the engine at 1/2 throttle or better. If you only see 12 volts your rectifier is faulty. I would clean those terminals on the rectifier by first removing the battery ground. Then clean the wires and terminals with some 320 wet or dry and then spray some parts cleaner. Once you have cleaned and wires reconnected and battery ground check the voltages again. Hal
If you have AC voltage and no charging volts around 14 volts you need a new rectifier.

You may still be able to get either from kohler/local toro dealer or mower shop, but you better have deep pockets with zipper's at your ankle, goto ebay & type kohler stator or kohler regulator in search, depending on what you need, usually plenty of used units avail,I've picked up 2 used stators & 4 regulators in the past 2ys for my WH tractors for less than $100 including shipping,if stator is bad make sure you get correct stator,if eng has solid state ign, stator will be different than stator used for 12v coil/point ign & battery charging.

Just a side topic Joe. I have a quick question. Solid state ignition setups mean that the system has no points. Is that correct? Is solid state the ONLY set up with no points?

You are correct, solid state has NO points,a solid state device inside trigger module/solid state coil(transistor, scr triac)is turned on/off inside module by an electronic circuit that sense's flywheel magnets, doing the same thing as a mech set of points,on kohler K series eng, this trigger module is powered by a seperate winding on alt stator(some model briggs, tecumseh eng also use this system)on most newer eng solid state ign modules self powered off flywheel magnets.

Should have also put in reply,if ign system 12v or if ign system old style magneto powered off flywheel magnets, these 2 systems will have points/condenser,the exception on 12v system is onan P series twins, which feed 12v to coil & use a solid state trigger module turned on/off by a magnet mounted on pto side of crankshaft to fire coil.

Oh wise ones,

I thought I should update this question.

Finally got the Wheel Horse home and other than having to keep the choke on a bit, it runs great (I'll tackle this problem next).

I ran at 1/2 throttle and voltage to battery was 13.47 volts and dropped to 13.23 volts at a low idle. I am assuming the charging system is fine. I ran the mower cutting grass for an hour and it never quit. As a matter of fact afterI quit mowing I pulled the mower into the shop and after shutting it off the battery still showed 13.2 volts.

Thanks for all your help!!!
