JD 425 runing rough/randomlyt quits

Trying to cut lawn tonight, and the 425 (20 HP Kawasaki V-Twin) starts good and runs for about 10-20 minutes, then it'll start to run rough and try to cut out. Turn off the deck and bring it down some, and it would recover some of the time.

I decided to stop and clean the deck out and let it cool some. After I cleaned out the deck and put it back on, it started up after a bit of cranking like nothing was wrong and ran for another 5-10 minutes or so and then up & quit, no sputter or anything. Wouldn't start up again either.

Tomorrow I'm gonna go to the dealer and get a new air & fuel filter for a start, but something else just doesn't seem right.

See if will start when it cools. If it does start and quits 10 or 15 minutes later you need to see if you're getting fire to your plugs. You need to do this asap before the engine cools. If you're not getting fire your ignition module or coil is weak. If you have good hot spark when it quits you probably have a fuel stoppage somewhere. Could be a fuel pump if it has one or dirt in the fuel system. Hal

I ran it again and it quit again after 10 minutes or so. Nothing I can really check the spark with though. It's got an ignition module/coil on either side of the engine for both cylinders, so it'd be hard to believe that both have gone out at the same time.

I'll see if I can talk to a mech. tomorrow when I go to get the filters for it.

Gonna take a long time to cut my 2 acre lawn at this rate... Plus the other one I picked up for cash....

Did some researching in the archives, and it sounds like the TDM is the culprit. Matches the symptoms described by others pretty much spot on.

Heres something to try, I believe this is a magneto ignition like most small engines. I think there is a white wire that runs under the shroud on the right side of the engine. There may be a coupler in the wire just before it goes under the shroud. Disconnect this and then see if it starts,if it does it is in the grounding system for the mags.

Check your gas cap. Should be a vent hole in it. If the vent hole is plugged, motor will act as you describe. When it does it again, remove the gas cap and see if the engine recovers.

Either clean out the cap or buy a new one.
