1954 Major hydraulics won't hold a lift

Once I've raised the hydraulics, they will no longer hold and drop down slowly. Hydraulic oil is full, and there are no leaks.
What is causing this? A leak or a failed seal or what? How can I find out what is wrong?

You have a leaking piston seal I would suspect. Not a bad job to do, remember to let the lift arms down before starting the job or it will get very messy.

Take the front valve chest off, the chest comes out with the ram cylinder on the back of it normally or it may stay in the housing. Once out you can push the piston out, replace the seal and put it all back together.

Well, thank you Majorman, this sounds simple enough, so long as there are no ornery bolts/nuts. I grew up with Fordson Majors in England 65 years ago, and found one in Delaware 13 years ago. I use it for pulling stumps and then sunset hayrides for grandkids around our Kentucky farm. It's a simple strong tractor and I work to keep it running well. Your help is invaluable for us all - thank you!
