another fordson hydraulic issue like the rest.

was told its a 1962 power major. 4 cylinder diesel. I got it and the arms were stuck in the up positon even with pto not engaged. checked oil and it was milked with water. pulled top drained water and oil, and cleaned entire case front to back. cleaned top out and cylinder really good. relief was stuck. got relief unstuck and working as it should. put fresh oil in and spun shaft by hand and pump shoots oil out of supply hole excellent. put cover back down and operated. had a tractor pull rig on it and arms were under it when they went up it was strong enough to brake one of the lift arms. removed lift rig and cleaned arm up and welded back together. lift didn't work again mowed for about two hours not working the lift. next day the lift was working agin. parked with arms 1/2 up and left for a day. it bled down and hasn't worked since. what am it missing? pleas help.

under the (snail) looking thing there was a pluger with a spring and a ball bearing. when you remove it the inside bore beyond that is a threaded hole which to me I thought should have something to back pressure to unseat the ball to send the fluid over to the cylinder. when I pulled the ball and spring, and plunger out there is nothing but a threaded hole so fluid can go straight through and back down to the tube beside the supply hole back to case. how is this suppose to back pressure that ball and spring? I am so very curious it hurts.

found a graphic pictorial view. I see there is a back pressure valve in the oil exhaust tube at the oil exhaust filter. obviously I need to check why I have no back pressure from this valve. good talk guys lets see what happens. I guess I will keep every one posted.

Sorry you didn?t get any responses, I own a 58 Ford son major, I haven?t had any issues with the lift other than it being week. Wish I could help more, but it sounds like there is a relief valve stuck somewhere for sure, it shouldn?t have broke the arm in the first place. That?s where I would start, hopefully it didn?t damage the pump or coupler.

Just got it. It was the back pressure valve under the oil exhaust filter. It had grit and the plunger was stuck. Freed it up and worked in and out with wd and pb blaster. I am very happy!

Glad you got it and reported back, it?s always nice to
find out the real problem and the fix.

I don't have that problem with my lift arms but mine drop like a
sack of potatoes. I put the brush hog on and start mowing and
get down one side of the meadow and the front of the hog is
eating dirt. I constantly have to keep popping them up. Also,
my PTO won't stay engaged unless I bungee cord it up or
keep pulling up with my hand. It's quite annoying. It sat for
probably 20 years and I changed every fluid possible, did the
hydraulic lines for my front loader because first time I tried to
tilt the bucket one blew. I wish I could help you but I'm new to
these Fordsons. I actually only bought it because it was
diesel, 3pt, live hydraulics and kind of live PTO. Besides the
fact I got this one and a gasser fordson that I don't know the
condition of the motor because I never tried to turn it but both
were $1200. My case VACs are too small for the brush hog, a
7' snowblower and they aren't live PTO or have hydraulics.
Besides, only 1 has the eagle hitch and that one needs major
overhaul. Head gasket is blown, rear main is blown, leaks fluid
between the rear and torque tube. It's a mess. I just use it to
salt the driveway after I plow or snowblow. Nice to hear other
guys have these things too. I haven't really heard of them
before I got mine.

RE: your pto. If you drain your transmission, pull your pto shift cover, and disassemble it, you should find a detent ball and spring. It might be stuck from setting, or the spring may be weak from age. Sometimes you can re stretch the spring slightly to give it more tension. You can use a light coat of RTV to reseal the cover. Make sure both the gear, and the fork are in neutral when you put it back together.
