1962 Fordson Major Offside rear wheel seized

Just bought a 1962 Fordson Major Diesel. Runs as hoped, but offside rear wheel seized after pulling Finger Mower 40 yards.
Cant see brake adjuster, or indication of brake drum where

wheel meets hub, no sign of brake cables or rods
Not acquired manual as yet, looking for one

Is it possible brakes located inboard within axle
Could problem be within drive train.

I'm 76, mobility problems, tractor bogged in field.
Sheer bloodymindedness, plus looking on mechanical

problems as puzzles which can be sorted, should get

me through. Any advice, links to manuals, or online

video most welcome. Regards, Mac

Many thanks Chris,

checked out diagrams and parts lists as

you suggested. Waiting for dry spell to get

back to the tractor and work out how to start

on opening up back axle .
First will try a few knocks with a hammer as

recommended elsewhere.

Thanks again

Much obliged, thanks

We are enjoying Scottish Autumn monsoon at the moment so will get onto job when land dries a bit.
Do you know of any helpful work sheets ,

or drawings?
Greetings from St Andrews

New Holland's online parts store web site still has all the parts diagrams for Majors I think. If you go put 'fordson' in the model search field, they should come up. Chris

Firstly you cannot have a 1962 Fordson Major Diesel as the FMD was not built after 1958. If the tractor is indeed 1962 it is a Super Major and these had a different brake system. The brakes on both tractors are on the bull pinion shafts, FMD brakes are shoe brakes operated by cables and are mounted on the end of the bull pinion shafts just behind the mud wings on the level of the footplates. The drums are behind a tin cover held on by three screws and are adjusted through the drum.

The Super Major has disc brakes mounted on the bull pinion shafts close to the axles housing, (you are possibly resting your feet on them) ;0) Look under the footplate and you will see a linkage from the pedal to the front of the brake housing. In the centre of this linkage, where it enters the brake housing, is a Nylok nut. Turn this nut anticlockwise to slacken off the brake. Then try driving backwards. The brake should free off possibly with a bit of a "Bang".

Super Major brakes are known for sticking when they need cleaning out but can be freed by driving in reverse when they stick on. The answer is to strip the brakes and clean the rust from the splined shaft and the actuating plates. Not a bad job.

many thanks for replies
I'm convinced I have a disc brake setup on what must be a super major.
Weather and mobility difficulty, allowing, I'll try adjustment and driving
in reverse.
