Major misfiring

1954 diesel Major starts to misfire when it works hard. Have owned it for 12 years and used it for light work and it usually runs well - so could it be a fuel pump or injector pump or injector issue? Your experience will be appreciated - thank you.

Just guessing but I would say it's a bad injector. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? Start with the simple and cheap stuff first. Possibly a valve out of adjustment too. Could be a sticking plunger in the injector pump I suppose also, if the valve lash and new fuel filter don't help, you could try putting some atf in the fuel tank, a couple of quarts wouldn't hurt anything as long as its half full or so. ATF will help clean the fuel system.

Changed the fuel filter and recoated the tank with redkote - clean fuel is the first priority! I can get the injectors tested easily. Will then follow your advice - thank you so much for your expertise!

I'm no expert, just going off of what I've learned over the years. One more thing to look at is the coupler for the injector pump, if it gets worn it can throw the timing off enough to cause trouble.

ivor from uk here and I remember from some years ago a neighbour had problems with a Nuffield that would run rough when it got hot and the problem was solved when he cleaned the rubbish from the radiator core
