My First Tractor

Hello, I just picked up my first tractor, a 1958 Fordson Dexta Diesel. Everything works and I intend to put it to immediate use. It came with the service manual which was a nice score. I'm curious about colors. In Europe, these things came with orange wheels, but all the American ones I see have grey wheels, including mine. Anyone have thoughts on color?

I think they were painted to keep up with the Fordson 5000.
However, as far as I know, the Dexta did not have gray engine
tin.

Post the numbers from the clutch/gearbox flange on the injection pump side and we can give you the correct date. I think you will find she is later than 1958 more like 1962/3.

If you can find the date codes from all the cast parts that will also help. They will look like A15B or 3A12 and are cast letters/numbers.

Gery tinwork and blue castings was the colour the tractor were painted in 1962/63, I liked them better than the blue/orange or blue/grey we had over here in England.

The only number I can make out is cast into the engine block sump. Tough to make out, but looks like BKR 1572

Its obvious the tractor has been painted before, lots of runs all over. If any of the numbers I'm looking for are stamped on tags, I'll never make them out.

For some reason the site will not allow me to post pictures like I have been doing for many years. I will try again but suggest you might look at fordsontractorpages.nl and try the Wiki there.

Codes to get on the Wiki are: user name-fordsontractorpages and password-dotty. There is an article called "Identifying your Dexta" which shows all the numbers and casting codes.

After visiting the fordandfordson site you referenced, I found the identify your Dexta page, but there were just pictures of where to find identifying numbers. Which was helpful, I was able to scrape off enough paint to identify the gearbox date code which reads H5C. But I cant find an identification table just yet to break that number down.

According to the link below, my gearbox was manufactured June 5th, 1959.

I tried to find the serial number, and I found a string of numbers, but they are very hard to read, and appear to be too long (too many numbers) to be a SN. Also, the font seems to change from number to number. I'll have to go over this thing after I give it a good sand blasting.

If you have to scrape that much paint off to get to the gearbox number you have a thick coat on there. You should also be able to see the codes on the axle trumpets and the clutch housing.

Yes it is a strange font used to stamp the serial number, special to Ford I think. For 1959 the number should start 957E with five figures behind, if it is a later tractor it will be 09A (B. C. or D depending on the year) again with five figures.

I was looking through the thread, and there are two posts by Majorman that I can't see. It says "this topic can not be displayed" Sup with that?
