Is your model a JCB 3CX if so I am a plant mechanic and work next door to a main JCB dealer.
If I can help just let me know and I will be more than pleased to do what I can. If I have to go to the dealer I would need the last seven digits of the serial number.

thanks for your reply but the machine is an early 60's JCB3 based on a super major tractor which belongs to an elderly farmer about 6 miles away and a while ago he had problems with the engine and when a retired mechanic dismantled the engine he said it was fitted with the wrong pistons and when I asked what was wrong with the pistons he said they were for the super major agricultural tractor and the pistons for the JCB version was fitted with the industrial engine which had different pistons I said to him that I thought the engines were all the same and he said I did not know what I was talking about so I am hoping that someone will know the answer whether all super majors are the same or was there an agricultural version and an industrial version

I've had a word with a mate who served his apprenticeship on plant and machinery in the early sixties. He tells me that there were actually three versions of the fordson 4D engine.
1:- agricultural
2:- industrial
3:- automotive
The agricultural and industrial both being 220cu/i.with the same piston diameter and stroke. However in the late 50's the industrial engine was fitted with high top pistons and thicker head gasket.

As your friends JCB3 is early 60's it is feasible that it could be an industrial engine with high top pistons. The industrial was known as a 592E engine, in the absence of numbers the external difference is that the industrial engine has a de-compression lever for handle starting.
Hope this helps and good luck.

many thanks to flyfifer and can you thank your mate also for supplying details regarding 4D engines, but that has raised another question as a decompression lever would be no use for a JCB3 as the hydraulic pump is driven by crankshaft

thanks for reply I need to go and look at this engine to find out what type it is which I will do later this week
