Howdy,
I have an issue with the pistons in the F I'm restoring. I have the block and piston at a local machine shop. My original intention was to get it cleaned up, valve seats worked on, and good dimensions for new rings. My shop guy is by the books so was wanting lots of information that just isn't really out there for Fordsons. He felt that the bore was way too big. We finally came to the conclusion we needed to re-sleeve the motor and just put the standard 4" piston rings in. That was when things got hairy. He did some more checking on the pistons and they seemed way too big for that. I had not cleaned my pistons in the shop up since I was waiting on his measurements before I did anything with them. I worked them over with a wire wheel and found "+.065. Bingo. It made sense why he found a bore of 4.070 at the top and 4.080 at the bottom of the cylinders. I was wondering what you all would do in this case? Should I just reuse the pistons and rings if the rings seem good enough? Should I try to find new rings this size (if so, where?) ? Or should I have it sleeved and go with all new pistons? I have heard of going with it and just using the old stuff with those dimensions but wondered if anyone had and if they would recommend it if you were doing the restoration for a friend? I know the re-sleeving option is going to be pricey. Thanks in advance and God bless.
