1963 Fordson Super major Hydraulic issues

Changed the hydraulic oil in the rear transmission, cleaned the filter and refilled. Now 3 pt arms will not lift at all...some kind of bubble I need to burp? Ran tractor for 20 minutes, drove around etc. Cannot get any action from the arms...just laying there...
Any help greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance Brett

Hi:

When you say changed hydraulic oil. That raises the question of what type of oil are you using.

From what I understand the Fordson Super major uses straight 30 oil in the hydraulics. That is all I have used in mine and never had a problem.

So it could be as simple as the type of oil you are using.

Hope this helps.

(quoted from post at 18:13:11 04/13/16) Have you got the PTO in gear? The pump is under the oil so there is no problem with bleeding it should pump
straight away.

Yes, pto running and still no hydraulic's. Used tractor 30 weight oil then actually changed to hydraulic oil to see if 30 was too thick. Neither helped.

Bad Pump? Strange to happen after the oil change. Murphy's law...shouldve left it alone.....

You need to get the 30W oil back in, the oil lubricates the final drive and dif. so hydraulic oil is to thin to do that
successfully.

Did you take the plate off the bottom of the housing and clean the wire filter? If so, you have done nothing that would have
affected the lift. Just a few thoughts that may be "teaching my grandmother to suck eggs" as we say in England.

Did you plug the intake holes in the pump pedestal with rag or paper to stop oil dripping whilst you cleaned the filter and then
forget to remove it when you put it back?

The only other filter in there is only accessible once you have the lift removed, have you had the top off and possibly dropped
the cotters that hold the pressure pipe in the rear axle housing? This would cause the main pressure pipe to not seal. You may
also have cut the "O" ring when you replaced the lift.

Didn't do a thing except clean the lower filter and replace the oil. Haven't had the top deck off at all. Nor touched anything else. Do these pumps just go out?
Thanks for all the help

No, the pumps do not fail, they tend to wear out and get weak. The key on the pump drive gear could fail and the gear is turning on the pump shaft but that is about all that can go wrong. If you released a bit of grit or something into the system it might have jammed the relief valve and caused a pump failure but that is all I can think of. I have had very many of these lifts and pumps apart and been on many Ford courses on them but cannot think of anything other than what I have suggested.

You may have to take the lift off to investigate further.

Brett,

The valve on the right -front side of the valve -chest hasn't got pulled out has it? The one that diverts oil from the lift arms to remote hyd. use??
If it Is pulled out, the arms won't move.
Wish I had a photo of the bit I mean!

Richard.

Taking off the top deck....pretty stuck...any tips for getting it loose? I don't want to snap anything...thank you!
